pride month part 3
A little late on this one from me! There were just a few too many things on my Sunday “to do” list. But better late than never, right?
This is part 3 of my pride month project. You can also find part 2 here.
I feel like each one of these posts has gotten shorter. June has been a tiring month for a lot of reasons, and I am low on spoons this evening. So low on spoons that even talking about one of my favourite things feels hard. I’m tired enough that it’s hard to find words (rarely an issue for me, I have to say).
There has been lots going on behind the scenes, and some things I am very excited to share in due course. For today, though: books.
June 15 (Sunday)
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. This feels like it does not need any introduction or description. Actually, talking about it has made me bump it to the top of my TBR. I know I am going to love it.
June 16 (Monday)
The Times I Knew I Was Gay by Eleanor Crewes. This is such a charming, vulnerable, lovely memoir. I really love this part of the Author’s Note at the beginning:
“This is not a handbook for coming out, or for being gay. But I like to think that if I had found this book as a child, or a teenager, or a young adult, I might have known a little more about myself a little sooner. ”
June 17 (Tuesday)
The Unbroken by CL Clark. I don’t read as much fantasy as I used to, but I loved this: it made me think, and it is also just downright gripping. I was very worried a lot of the time, in the best way. This re-ignited my fantasy purchasing, and is responsible for a substantial increase in my TBR.
June 18 (Wednesday)
Sissy by Jacob Tobia. This is one of the books I bought by trans and gender diverse authors shortly after I started to realise I was non-binary, and then did not read because I just did not want to think about gender identity. But now: back on the TBR. It’s nice to reflect on how much happier in my identity I am now, as opposed to even a couple of years ago.
June 19 (Thursday)
Horse Barbie by Geena Rocero. This was such an interesting and generously written book. It taught me a lot about something I didn’t know much about: trans pageants in the Philippines. It was so rich in detail — both details around Geena’s experience, and also her really vivid observations about the world around her.
June 20 (Friday)
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. Another absolute banger with fascinating character dynamics. A little haunting. I’ve read it a couple of times and it’s probably time to read it again — every time I do, I find some new details. I can’t say much about my favourite things without giving things away, but this is just so good.
June 21 (Saturday)
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White. This has been on my TBR for ages, but I haven’t read it because I am a scaredy cat and don’t read very much horror. I really want to read it though. Maybe this month is the time. I also just absolutely love this cover.
Until next week! Or a little under a week, fingers crossed.
